Overview & Cultural Background
The Afar are a Cushitic pastoralist group inhabiting the hyper-arid Horn of Africa, spanning northeastern Ethiopia, Djibouti, and southern Eritrea. Residing in the Afar Triangle and Danakil Depression—one of the hottest and lowest inhabited environments on Earth—the Afar have developed extraordinary socio-ecological adaptations to survive in extreme desert conditions.
Customary Afar life centers around mobile pastoralism. Herders migrate seasonally between lowland salt flats during wetter periods and elevated highland pastures during severe dry seasons. Water and pasture management is regulated through complex customary legal codes (mada’a) and clan governance structures that enforce equitable water-sharing at communal wells. The Afar language (Qafaraf) and oral traditions preserve detailed ecological knowledge of desert flora, weather forecasting, and livestock breeding.
