Overview & Cultural Background

Apennine shepherds practice vertical transhumance across the rugged karst plateaus and limestone peaks of central Italy, moving sheep between highland summer pastures (alpeggi) in Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise and lowland winter plains in Puglia and Maremma. Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, Italian transhumance (la transumanza) has shaped the ecology, gastronomy, and cultural landscape of the Apennines for millennia.

Herding communities maintain ancient cheese-making traditions, producing artisanal Pecorino Abruzzese and Ricotta directly in mountain stone huts (casoni). The survival of these pastures is essential for maintaining biodiversity, preventing forest fires, and preserving historic mountain footpaths.
