Overview & Cultural Background
The Nenets are Indigenous Samoyedic reindeer herders inhabiting the extreme Arctic tundras of the Yamal Peninsula in northwestern Siberia. Migrating up to 1,000 kilometers annually between winter taiga forests and summer Arctic Ocean grazing grounds, the Nenets complete the longest land migration of any pastoralists in the world.
Nenets life revolves around their reindeer herds, which provide food, clothing from reindeer hides (malitsa), bone tools, and transportation using wooden sledges (narty). Families live in reindeer-hide conical tents (chum). Despite industrial mega-projects on Yamal gas fields, the Nenets maintain remarkable cultural vitality and spiritual connection to their tundra homeland.
